What is Tor Browser?

Tor Browser is free, open-source software that enables anonymous communication by directing internet traffic through a worldwide network of relays. It's essential for accessing .onion sites like DrugHub.

Anonymity

Hides your IP address and location from websites you visit

Onion Access

Only way to access .onion hidden services

Censorship Resistance

Bypass internet censorship and firewalls

Installing Tor Browser

Step 1: Download from Official Source

IMPORTANT: Only download Tor Browser from the official website to avoid malicious versions.

Official Download:

https://www.torproject.org/download/

Available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Select your operating system and download the installer.

Step 2: Install & Launch

Windows:

  1. Run the downloaded .exe file
  2. Choose installation location
  3. Launch Tor Browser from the installation folder

macOS:

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg file
  2. Drag Tor Browser to Applications folder
  3. Launch from Applications

Linux:

  1. Extract the downloaded archive
  2. Navigate to extracted folder
  3. Run ./start-tor-browser.desktop

Step 3: Connect to Tor Network

  1. Click "Connect" on the Tor Browser startup screen
  2. Wait for connection to establish (usually 10-30 seconds)
  3. You'll see a confirmation page when connected

Note: If you're in a country that blocks Tor, click "Configure" instead and select a bridge option.

Using Tor Browser Safely

Security Settings

Tor Browser has three security levels. For DrugHub, we recommend:

Security Level Description Recommended
Standard All features enabled ✓ Yes
Safer Disables some scripts Optional
Safest Maximum security, may break sites Not recommended

To change: Click the shield icon in the address bar, then select "Change..."

Best Practices

Don't Maximise Window

Keep Tor Browser at default size. Resizing can fingerprint your browser.

Don't Install Extensions

Browser extensions can compromise your anonymity. Use Tor Browser as-is.

Never Login to Personal Accounts

Don't access Gmail, Facebook, or other personal services through Tor.

Don't Download Files

Avoid downloading files via Tor unless absolutely necessary.

Use HTTPS When Available

Always verify the padlock icon for clearnet sites accessed via Tor.

Accessing DrugHub

  1. Open Tor Browser and connect to the network
  2. Copy the official DrugHub onion URL (listed at top of this page)
  3. Paste it into the Tor Browser address bar
  4. Complete the Proof of Work challenge (may take 30-60 seconds)
  5. Once loaded, you can browse or proceed with PGP login

⚠️ Important Reminders

  • DrugHub requires decent CPU power for Proof of Work
  • Connections may be slow—this is normal for Tor
  • Each user gets a unique private mirror after login
  • Never share your private mirror URL with others

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using VPN + Tor Incorrectly

VPN → Tor is acceptable. Tor → VPN is not recommended and compromises anonymity.

Trusting Random Onion Links

Always verify onion URLs through official sources. Phishing sites are common.

Using Tor on Work/School Networks

Network administrators can see you're using Tor, even if they can't see what you're doing.
